Review of the challenges of the global information society
People have always been dreaming about the
future. Inventions of the that can only be explained now, literature about the
futuristic world and things that are related to space invasion can only prove
the previous statement. The report of the year 2004 to the Parliament of
Finland by Pekka Himanen even though it was written 17 years ago has shown us
several development models and some predictions for the future which are close
to nowadays situation in the world.
First of all, I would like to
mention some development strategies that I consider similar to the ones
mentioned by Pekka. For example, let’s overview the Singapore model and its
trend of moving business production to cheaper countries. As in 2004, the world
slightly has changed in locating manufacturing affiliates in such countries as
China, India, or Malaysia. Apple, the flagman of the smartphone world is
cheapening its industry by assembling iPhones and other products in China.
Products of large clothes brands are as well using “cheap power” to make
materials for future products. I think that such a tendency can only lead to
reducing labor costs more and more, which is not very good. We all are trying
to bring equality to some social aspects but at the same time, we somehow
forget about people in the before-mentioned countries.
Secondly, I consider the
so-called “Finnish” model as one that is having a great influence in today’s
world. Everything is now trying to be digitalized and Estonia is serving as a
good example of this. Though it may seem confusing for some elder members of
society, overall it is a great experience to make less paperwork than doing
logs in a database. Yes, it is not perfect but revolutionary in this area. Not
to mention cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and Bitcoin, whose new approach to
payment has blown the minds of millions. Ten years ago people can’t even
imagine how something that is not material and is made by doing calculations
can be a currency. Everybody was too skeptical about it didn’t pay attention to
Bitcoin. As a result, we have lots of “painful” stories of crypto wallet owners
who lost their wealth. Now we are still discovering edges of IT and no one
knows what sphere will be influenced next.
To conclude, I think there are
still a lot of differences between predictions and real life. We can’t take
everything into account and there are too many variables that have an
influence. It is unreal today to think of anything that will happen in even
such a short period as 10 years realistically. The only thing which remains is
just to dream.
